Studio Phillips is home to customized, joyful, effective personal support for children and teens with Rachel Phillips. I look forward to connecting!
In-person and remote lessons:
At the onset of COVID-19 I switched to virtual tutoring, which I maintained for two years, keeping many of my longtime students the entire time. Beginning in summer 2022, I returned to in-person tutoring in a fantastic vintage trailer at my home in Pacifica. Options for virtual tutoring continue, if it’s a good fit for your child.
Younger children and students needing reading instruction tend to work better in-person. Middle school and older students, and those focussing on expository or creative writing, as well as occasional homework help with writing assignments, are a great fit for virtual lessons.
Ms. Rachel’s teaching history and educational offerings:
For twenty years I have worked one-on-one with children and young adults ranging in age from kindergarten to early college years. My students represent the full diversity of the Bay Area, and are homeschooled, unschooled, or attend public or private school. Each of my students and their family is unique and wonderful! I am honored to often have students for several years, helping with a variety of skills and subjects over time. In addition to working part time as a tutor, I am a photographer, visual artist and writer. These skills, as part of a broad background in the humanities, often inform my tutoring work. My artwork can be found at TreadwellPress.com
Specializing in helping dyslexic learners master reading and writing, I embrace a holistic philosophy of addressing areas of academic struggle through each students’ complimentary strengths and interests. My work ranges from teaching reading to five year-olds just learning their alphabet to helping high school age students with honors-level classes.
Carrying forward my experience as a homeschooled child and teen, I develop a unique program for each student and often build learning around unit studies and projects tailored to their interests.
I have a B.A. in creative writing from Skidmore College, and worked at Lindamood-Bell in both their reading remediation and reading comprehension programs prior to starting my own business. Additionally, I am certified in the Phono-Graphix method of teaching reading.
